The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for overall operation of laboratory. Performs tests that help physicians diagnose and treat diseases. Prepare samples for analysis, use equipment to locate microorganisms, monitor tests and procedures, analyze the chemical content of fluids, match blood for transfusions, and test for drug levels in the blood.



  1. Performs technical laboratory functions including chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, immunology, and hemoccult.


  2. Reports test results following clinic protocols drawing special alerts to physician and/or nurses on critical results.


  3. Ensures quality control in collecting specimens and ensuring appropriate sampling and records.


  4. Supervises Laboratory assistant and assist with training of medical staff in proper phlebotomy techniques and procedures.


  5. Maintains equipment and supplies.


  6. Verifies insurance and Medicare directives for laboratory orders. Assesses laboratory orders for medical necessity against ICD-9 codes. Ensures patient ABN form is completed when deemed necessary after reviewing patient’s insurance information.

    Education and/or Experience                                                              

    High School diploma or GED required. Successful completion of Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) course of study required.


    Minimum two years laboratory experience required. Experience in a clinic setting preferred.


    Computer Skills                                                          

    Knowledge of Microsoft Office software.


    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

    Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW), Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Department of Public Health (DPH), and American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologists (AMT) or Physician Office Laboratory Technician (POLT) certification required.
