Job Description


Advance your graphic design skills, network and learning opportunities with the Long Beach Water Department! We are a Commission-governed department of the City of Long Beach consisting of over 240 employees and operating with an annual budget of approximately $145 million. The department is seeking applicants for the position of Graphic Design Intern.

The selected candidate will be placed into the City's Administrative Intern Non-Career position, with a maximum of 1,600 work hours available over a 12-month period. Non-career employees are considered temporary, at-will, and are not typically eligible for health/dental/vision insurance; however, they may be eligible for sick leave.

The Graphic Design Intern will work alongside the Public Information Officer in the Government & Public Affairs Bureau to create, design and implement creative advertisements and informational material to promote the Long Beach Water brand and story of exceptional water and exceptional service. The Graphic Design Intern will create material for Water Department programs, campaigns and events targeted towards various community audiences (homeowners, business owners, teachers and students 4th grade through college, and multicultural).


The Graphic Design Intern's primary responsibilities will include developing materials focused on the department's sustainability and public health initiatives, including water conservation and water use efficiency, environmental safety and water quality. The Graphic Design Intern will also create internal department collateral and collaborate with City-wide departments.

The Graphic Design Intern will be responsible for creative advertisements and projects for print, digital and social media. Projects may include creatives in print, photography, audio/visual or animation, depending on skills and interests. The Graphic Design Intern will develop creative layouts and visual concepts, while maintaining a cohesive look and feel of the department's brand standards, proof and prepare final files based on supplied specifications.

You will have the opportunity to gain experience communicating and collaborating with creative agencies, trade printers and vendors that work with Long Beach Water. Past designs have gone on to win statewide recognition for most effective data visualization/infographic and received local recognition through the City of Long Beach community.

The Graphic Design Intern may have the opportunity to attend the Adobe MAX conference and bring back new, graphic design concepts to implement.

Position Details

* This Internship is a part-time, non-career position that will last approximately one year.
* The Graphic Design Intern usually works 20 hours per week but can work up to 40 hours per week; flexibility is a bureau value.
* The Graphic Design Intern will have the opportunity to create an exceptional graphic design portfolio of creatives for various mediums, including print, digital and social media.


* The internship is open to undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a degree in Art or Fine Arts, with an emphasis in Graphic Design.
* Must have the ability to work with Adobe Creative Cloud, including Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign on PC-based software.
* Must possess a valid driver's license. A California license will be required within six months of hire.
