Description

Starting date: September 15 or as negotiated. Responsibilities: The manager will oversee the day to day operations of the Horticulture Research Farm. Duties include planning and scheduling all farm operations including those related to research, teaching and extension. The successful candidate will assist faculty in research by coordinating and conducting field-scale operations as needed for establishment, maintenance, and protection of experiments and will select and assign appropriate field sites for research based on site characteristics such as soil type and infrastructure required by the type of research being conducted. Additional duties include reviewing historical crop production records, maintaining crop records from individual fields (including crops grown, and fertilizers and chemicals applied on both research and non-research fields), directing and assisting in the collection of research data, developing budgets, marketing of crops grown, and providing safety training. The manager will supervise and direct technical-service, staff, wage payroll, student, and part-time employees, assign specific job duties and conduct performance evaluations. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with a team of Farm Managers to facilitate the successful coordination of research, teaching and extension activities and efficient use of resources. This job will be filled as a level 4, or level 5, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus eight years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 4. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. A Bachelor of Science in Horticulture, Agronomy, Plant Science or a related field is highly preferred. A Master's degree is preferred. Applicants should possess experience with farm operations and have a strong understanding of field research. A Class A CDL and category 18 PA Pesticide Applicators License will be required. Note: This position is subject to Federal Department of Transportation testing for alcohol and controlled substances (49 CFR Part 40), and physical examination requirements per 67 PA. code 231.85. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard
