Job Description


The Payroll Manager leads the payroll function for Patterson Companies' 7,000 U.S.-based employees to ensure that payroll is paid timely and accurately and ensures government requirements are met. The role partners cross-functionally with human resources and accounting teams. This position manages a team of payroll professionals.


* Manage both semi-monthly and biweekly disbursement of multi-state payroll, including garnishments, benefits and taxes to 6,000+ employees consistent with federal and state wage and hour laws.
* Ensure the processing of pay for new hires, temporary workers, transfers, promotions and terminations is accurate and timely.
* Supervise/mentor and train payroll staff.
* Prioritize regular workload, various projects and adhoc reporting for the department.
* Review and analyze current payroll, benefits and tax procedures in order to recommend and implement changes leading to best-practice operations
* Partner with internal and external audit teams to ensure sox controls are followed.
* Communicate effectively with other departments to review cross-departmental impacts and reconcile data sharing
* Manage regular preparation of relevant management reports, including weekly, monthly, quarterly and year-end reports (gross payroll, hours worked, PTO accrual, tax deductions, benefit deductions, etc.)
* Validate the quarterly and annual tax returns
* Partner with Tax team on payroll tax audits.
* Investigates opportunities for improving or further automating existing payroll systems
* Partner with corporate accounting to reconcile all payroll related accounts.
* Provide guidance to other departments as to what effect situations or issues have on employee paychecks.
* Performs other duties as assigned.


* Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or business field; equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will be considered.
* 5+ years of multi-state payroll experience required.
* Previous supervisory experience.
* Highly organized and a team player.
* Customer service oriented
* Knowledge of ADP Enterprise, ADP Reporting, and Etime (Kronos) is desired.
* Advanced Microsoft Excel Skills
* Accounting experience, including general ledger and reconciling various accounts
