Job Description


The Oncology Clinical Trials Pharmacist is an integral member of the Cancer Center study team, serving as a resource and liaison for both the ambulatory and inpatient oncology practices. We offer dedicated research support, sharing the MGH mission to advance care through innovative research and education. The Oncology Clinical Trials Pharmacist evaluates new protocols and amendments for the Scientific Review Committee (SRC) and the Institutional Review Board (IRB), and works in close collaboration with other members of the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center. The Oncology Clinical Trials Pharmacist serves to protect the safety of study participants and the integrity of our clinical trials by ensuring compliance with institutional, sponsor and regulatory requirements surrounding investigational oncology medications and patient care.

Each disease group in the MGH Cancer Center has a dedicated Research Pharmacist who meets routinely with the multidisciplinary study teams and sponsors. The Oncology Clinical Trials Pharmacist prepares specific procedures and systems for each clinical trial and is responsible for the training of pharmacy staff on protocol design, objectives, and procedures, including patient monitoring. Individual pharmacists cover 2-4 disease groups, and collaborate to provide cross-coverage: Benign Hematology Bone Marrow Transplant, Breast, Breast, Multiple Myeloma, Gastrointestinal, Gynecologic, Head & Neck, Leukemia, Lymphoma, Melanoma, Neuro-Oncology, Pediatrics, Phase 1, Sarcoma, Thoracic, and Cellular Therapy.


* Review protocols and amendments for drug safety, feasibility, impacts to clinicians and staff, and submitting comments to the SRC & IRB committee panels

* Acts as a liaison for principal investigators, the research office, sponsors, pharmacy, and the IRB

* Assist in the development of investigational chemotherapy treatment plans for Beacon, the oncology arm of EPIC

* Oversee the safe handling and preparation of investigational medications

* Provide drug information to other health care professionals

* Dispense investigational medication to subjects enrolled in clinical trials

* Ensure investigational medication orders comply with approved protocols

* Participate in and identify quality improvement projects

* Participate in the training and mentorship of new employees, students and residents

* Promote a culture of safety; adheres to established practices and policies of the department

* Review study patient medications for appropriateness in collaboration with the study team. Review home medications for patients in screening for oncology clinical trials, to identify prohibited medications and potential drug-drug interactions or additive toxicities

* Oversee technician activities and performs quality control checks

* Complete reports, including Safety Reports and Notes to Files; develop corrective action plans

* Preparation and management of sponsor and FDA audits and monitoring visits


* Excellent verbal and written communication skills

* Excellent interpersonal and professional skills

* Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint

* Attention to detail and ability to plan, organize, and prioritize

* Fluency in English

* Ability to work well on a team as well as independently

* Competent in math skills, including proportions, ratios and conversions


Massachusetts Pharmacy License in good standing


3 years of pharmacy experience required, preferably in a teaching hospital and experience with investigational drugs


Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of Pharmacy and must be licensed to practice pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts; specialty board certification preferred.


Must be able to lift up-to 20 lbs.

Must be able to stand or sit for extended periods of time
