Opportunities exist statewide for Transportation Equipment Operators, Diesel and Auto Mechanics, Clerks/Radio Dispatchers, Tradesman Helpers, Welders, Semi-Skilled Laborers, Custodial Workers and Stock Clerks. 
Opportunities are based on operational needs, so there may not be open positions for each job title in every county.

Equipment Operators perform a variety of duties during the winter season, such as snow removal, traffic control, equipment repair and maintenance, guide rail repair and truck unloading. Based on location, starting salary for this position is $15.74 - $18.86 hourly.

Diesel Mechanics perform repairs and maintenance on various pieces of PennDOT equipment and diesel-powered vehicles, including heavy trucks weighing 26,001 pounds or greater, graders, backhoes, front end loaders, etc. Based on location, starting salary for this position is $20.00 - $21.27 hourly.

Auto Mechanics conduct routine maintenance and repair of vehicles, equipment and parts, to ensure that all fleet vehicles and equipment operate at peak efficiency within department standards.  Starting salary for this position is $17.73 hourly.

Clerks/Radio Dispatchers operate radios during snowstorms and perform various clerical functions throughout the season. Starting salary for this position is $13.97 hourly.

Tradesman Helpers assist the mechanics with the maintenance and repair of equipment. Starting salary for this position is $15.74 hourly.

Welders perform a variety of welding duties such as structural welding of bridge members and fabricating repair parts, in addition to repairs to frames on equipment, hitches and plows. Starting salary for this position is $17.73 hourly.

Semi-Skilled Laborers act as a mechanic's helper to assist with building maintenance as well as perform small repairs such as lubrication jobs, light repairs and tire changes, cleaning and painting equipment. Starting salary for this position is $15.74 hourly.

Custodial Workers provide custodial support to various roadside rest facilities. Starting salary for this position is $13.97 hourly.

Stock Clerks assist in maintaining and distributing supplies. Starting salary for this position is $13.97 hourly.

Military members and recently-honorably discharged veterans who possess at least two years' experience in operating a commercial motor vehicle as part of their military job requirements may qualify for these opportunities based on meeting the Military Commercial Driver's License Skills Testing Waiver (DL-398 Form (Download PDF reader)) as found on www.dmv.pa.gov.



Equipment Operators - Graduation from a Commercial Driver's License Training School;
OR have two months of experience in the operation and maintenance of single-chassis trucks with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating between 26,000 and 32,000 pounds or any combination unit over 26,000 pounds with a tow greater than or equal to a 10,000 pound trailer; OR have successfully completed the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program; OR have an equivalent combination of experience and training. All candidates will be subject to a driving skills test as part of the interview process. The majority of these tests will be conducted on vehicles with manual transmissions; current/valid Medical Examination Certificate required. 
Special Requirement: Possession of a valid PA Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Air Brake (L) Restriction removed.

Diesel Mechanics - Three years of journey level mechanical experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment. The three years should include one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment. Post-high school training in the automotive trades may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis .
Special Requirements: Possession of PA Official Motor Vehicle Inspection Mechanic Certificate, and a valid PA Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Auto Mechanics - Four years of experience in the automotive mechanic trade; OR Completion of an approved apprenticeship; OR Any combination of experience and training. 
Special Requirements: Certain positions include the possession of a current and valid PA license of the class appropriate to the vehicle operated and inspected; ALL positions require possession of a PA Inspection Mechanic Certification, Class 1 at minimum.

Clerks/Radio Dispatchers - Previous clerical or radio dispatching experience, including the utilization of electronic communications equipment and visual display equipment preferred, but not required.

Tradesman Helpers -  Previous experience working with Auto Mechanics is preferred, but not required.
Special Requirement: Certain positions may require possession of a valid Class C Pennsylvania's Driver's License.

Welders - Four years of experience in the welding trade; or an equivalent combination of experience and training. 
Special Requirement: Possession of a Class C Driver's License or above.

Semi-Skilled Laborers - One year of experience in laboring work including the use of tools and equipment used in maintenance or construction.
Special Requirement: Certain positions may require possession of a valid Class C Pennsylvania's Driver's License.

Custodial Workers - Previous custodial and janitorial experience preferred, but not required.

Stock Clerks - Graduation from High School or successful completion of a GED program.
