Staff Accountant

Department: Finance

Reports To: Controller

FLSA Status: Full Time Non-exempt (37.5-hours)

Location: Asheville, North Carolina

Summary:

North Carolina Outward Bound School (NCOBS) is the oldest independent Outward Bound School in the country. Since 1967, NCOBS has delivered challenging wilderness adventures that teach more than outdoor skills. Our wilderness courses, from the mountains of North Carolina to the shores of South Florida to the peaks of South America, help our students learn the value of teamwork, discover leadership abilities, find inspiration and feel a sense of accomplishment.

The Staff Accountant is a vital part of the business office and helps the school deliver life-changing courses. This role will assist the CFO and Controller in providing accurate and timely financial reporting for the North Carolina Outward Bound School.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Not all-inclusive):

* Record deposits, development revenue, course revenue and miscellaneous revenue.


* Reconcile balance sheet accounts.


* Process and record daily bank deposits and credit card collections.


* Prepare tax filings such as sales and use tax forms and 1099 forms.


* Assist in preparing monthly and quarterly reports.


* Prepare multi-state sales and use taxes, sales tax refund and federal tax forms.


* Calculate and pay national park user fees.


* Assist in month-end closing.


* Assist in required audits.


* Complete cash account reconciliations.


* Process and record employee donations to NCOBS into Financial Edge.


* Download bi-monthly and quarterly payroll reports.


* Reconcile monthly petty cash reports.


* Reconcile monthly employee health insurance and dental insurance payments.


* Process monthly employee retirement fund contributions.


* Other duties as assigned.



Qualifications:

* Bachelor's degree in accounting or comparable related experience.


* 5+ years of accounting experience preferred.


* Experience with balance sheet reconciliation.


* Familiarity with Financial Edge software or other similar "mid-market" finance software packages.


* Ability to use Microsoft Office products, strong excel skills and demonstrated the ability to learn various

accounting software.


* Experience working within a team and community environment.


* Strong personal initiative, motivation, and resourcefulness.


* Sweats the details and values an organized work environment.


* Be able to clear all background and motor vehicle screening.



Working Conditions

* Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.


* Casual and dog-friendly office environment.



Compensation and Benefits:

* Salary is a comparable to western North Carolina non-profits and based on experience.


* Eligible for full-time benefits.
