Job Description

Operation Smile, headquartered in Virginia Beach, Virginia, is an international children's medical charity with a presence in more than 60 countries, whose network of more than 5,400 medical volunteers from over 80 countries is dedicated to helping improve the health and lives of children. General Description:

The Student Programs ISLC Media Intern will assist in preparing and implementing the International Leadership Conference in collaboration with the Student Programs staff, especially the department's Content Producer, and Student Team Leaders. The intern must be an active participant in planning and covering the conference on site in Seattle, Washington, for two weeks in July. Through this experience, the intern will hone valuable written and spoken communication skills and curate a portfolio of strong contributions to a dynamic social media and marketing campaign.

Essential Functions:


Provide administrative assistance to the the Student Programs Content Producer and Student Programs Staff.
Assist with creation and edits of ISLC materials as needed.

Social Media Project

Help the Student Programs Content Producer refine and implement social media strategy prior to and during the conference using Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
Manage and post on each of these media.

Editorial Project

Work with Content Producer to develop coverage and storylines before, during and after ISLC.
Gather the reporting and write stories as assigned without factual errors and in line with journalistic ethics.
Help the Student Programs Content Producer find and interview people relevant to stories.
Guide and assist U-Voice student reporters with their projects.
Edit stories as necessary.
Take video and photos to help tell the story.

Additional duties as necessary or assigned.

Experience Required (education/work) :

Previous attendance of ISLC

Characteristics/Skills Required:

Savvy user of social media platforms
Strong and clear writer who strikes the right tone and has excellent news judgment
Has a keen eye for spotting and correcting grammatical errors as well as maintaining a consistent message
Must be deadline-oriented and timely
Has experience working in content-driven environment, such as a school newspaper or yearbook
Multimedia skills - including photography and videography - a plus
Must be highly motivated, enthusiastic, detail-oriented and well organized
Ability to be self-directed and capable of working with little supervision
Must be able to work with high school and college students to empower and support their growth as leaders
Strong work ethic
Team player
Problem solver
Ability to work productively and juggle multiple tasks
Previous involvement with Operation Smile as a student volunteer
