Summary:   The Safety Specialist is responsible for implementing safety and health programs within the day-to-day electrical generation facility operations with a focus on injury prevention and regulatory compliance.

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

 

  • Influence and motivate others to work in a safe manner.
  • Coordinate and integrate compliance with Cal-OSHA and NRG safety standards.
  • Communicate safety requirements to managers and employees.
  • Implement the Company's Safety and Health Management System.
  • Coordinate and integrate safety processes with facility management including: regulatory interpretation in the field, providing timely internal and external reporting, maintaining OSHA records, and overseeing overall facility safety and health compliance.
  • Conduct internal safety and health assessments/audits and incremental inspections of the facility to ensure compliance.
  • Assist with the implementation and execution of corporate safety policies and initiatives by working with site and regional management.
  • Assist management with the investigation of accidents and incidents, perform root cause analyses and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrences.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of safety programs, designs improvements, and work with management to implement identified improvements and provide recommendations, as needed.
  • Evaluate, develop, and assist with delivering training programs to improve skills in the safety aspects of employees' jobs.
  • Assist other Safety Specialists and the Regional Safety Manager with improving safety the region's safety processes.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work with minimum direct supervision.
  • Strong working knowledge of regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must possess functional computer skills specifically in Microsoft Office software and ability to learn basic database user and data entry.
  • Basic understanding of occupational health and industrial hygiene principles.
  • Ability to positively interact with regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to interact effectively in a team environment and with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to compile, analyze, and interpret data.
  • An understanding of the factors that influence human behavior.
  • Ability to conduct incident root cause analyses (e.g., using TapRoot or similar processes).
  • Ability to prioritize tasks within a fast paced dynamic environment.

 

 Physical Requirements:

  • Stand, walk, climb ladders, bend, kneel, crawl, pull/push and lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Perform work both indoors and outdoors, occasionally in adverse conditions including low light and high temperatures.
  • Wear job related personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Occasionally work at heights and enter enclosed vessels or confined spaces.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Willingness to work outside normal business hours as necessary, especially during maintenance outages, for critical issue resolution, and to achieve project milestones.
  • Willingness to travel within the requirements of the position.

 

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Safety and Health or related discipline from an accredited college or university is preferred.
  • Certified Safety Professional, Occupational Health & Safety Technologist, Certified Industrial Hygienist or similar is advantageous.
  • The successful candidate must possess the educational requirements of the job, but also proven leadership skills in communicating and maintaining  a safety culture and a safety-aware work environment.

 

Experience 

  • A minimum of two years full time Safety experience.  In lieu of two years Safety experience, four years industry related experience with safety responsibilities may be suffcient.
  • Experience in power plants or related industries is preferred.
