What's the role?

An Accounting Intern in the Controllers department will be assigned to one division of the department but have the opportunity to shadow the other divisions on a quarterly basis and potentially rotate to a different division after one year. The specific responsibilities within each division will vary. Basic responsibilities for all Interns include entry of general ledger journal entries into the accounting system, reconciliation of accounts, and completion of various projects that may be assigned. The function of each division within the Controllers department is as follows:

Investment Accounting: Assures that all financial activity related to the investment portfolios is accounted for in the general ledger. Monitors the financial results of the investments and prepares financial and compliance reports, analysis and disclosures to meet all reporting requirements.

Mutual Fund Accounting: Performs fund administration for the Northwestern Mutual Series Fund, the NMIMC Co-Investment Funds, and Separate Accounts. Oversees the Mutual Fund daily accounting, prepares and reports the financial and tax accounting results, and ensure fund compliance with SEC laws, IRS regulations, and internal investment restrictions.

Daily Operations Accounting: Reconciles cash balances for Northwestern Mutual, subsidiaries and affiliates. Performs manual accounting for Enterprise focused activities and Unclaimed Property reporting. This is a data entry position with potential for projects across the department

Risk Product Accounting: Assures that financial activity related to Northwestern Mutual's insurance and investment products are appropriately accounted for.

Tax: Completes federal, state and local corporate tax returns. Performs reporting and payment of local, state and federal taxes. Prepares estimates of income taxes and year-end tax accruals. Assures compliance with federal, state, local and foreign tax laws and regulations.

Financial Planning, Reporting, & Analysis: Coordinates, prepares and distributes financial statements and reports for various Northwestern Mutual entities. Measures, analyzes and reports on the financial results and key performance indicators for all product lines. Facilitates strategic planning, product pricing and profitability measurement and reporting. Assures that financial activity related to Northwestern Mutual's investment products are appropriately accounted for.

Data Solutions: Collaborates with others throughout the company to help them make better decisions, informed by the financials and the economics of our business. These informs decisions support maximizing project value and maintaining our financial strength while optimizing resources to deliver on our transformation. Our scope includes application support, new and emerging technology, data strategy, modeling, and visualization.
