Job Description

NW BOCES has an opening for an Assistant Special Education Director for Routt County and a School Psychologist for 2018-2019 school year.

Description:  NW BOCES is looking for an Assistant Special Education Director to serve the school districts in Routt County (Hayden, South Routt, and Steamboat Springs). 

Assistant Director will perform the following duties:

  • supervise and evaluate designated BOCES Special Services Providers using a formalized evaluation process;
  • maintain knowledge of and implement services in accordance with IDEA and ECEA requirements;
  • serve as a consultant to designated special education staff and district administration regarding the IEP process, documentation, meetings, services, resources, and attending team meetings, as needed and requested (Routt County); and
  • provide recommendations on programming and staffing related to special education when asked by SPED Director, Executive Director and individual School Districts.
  • This position will work very closely with the Executive Director and the Special Education Director as an administrative team to provide support for all Northwest BOCES programming and services.


The NW BOCES desires an Assistant Special Education Director who:

  • Is knowledgeable in special education, and Colorado state and federal school law
  • Has a broad PK-12 educational background, preferably including classroom and administrative experience
  • Can build and maintain partnerships among district staff, related service providers, and families to benefit students
  • Is collaborative, approachable and supportive
  • Has excellent listening and communication skills
  • Is decisive and a consistent leader who can support administrators and teachers
  • Values integrity and objectivity
  • Has a Master’s degree in education, special education, or in a related field of special services from an accredited college or university.
  • Has an Administrator licensure in the state of Colorado, preferably a Special Education Director endorsement in the state of Colorado or able to obtain.
  • Has a minimum of 5 years' experience teaching/working with students with disabilities or similar employment duties.
  • Has experience as a principal or district-level director or similar employment duties, including supervision of staff working with students. 


The NW BOCES is offering an annual salary (depending on experience and educational attainment) starting at $69,000 for the Routt County Assistant Director of Special Education who will be contracted for 210 days with the schedule to be flexible with all three school district calendars.  Competitive benefit package includes Colorado PERA Retirement Plan and health insurance (individual health, dental and vision with a small monthly contribution from the employee - $30.71 currently).
