The Assistant Patient Care Manager (APCM) assumes shift-related fiscal, clinical and operational responsibility for his/her unit. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to, facilitating unit flow, overseeing/supporting the design, being a clinical/leadership resource and performing off-shift evaluations. The APCM will not have patient assignment.

Provide continuum of oversight/leadership of the IPR process to ensure the design is fully implemented on off shifts to meet targeted IPR goals.

Distribution of managerial workload throughout the day to allow more time for day managers to focus on the IPR design (goal 80% of time spent on the unit doing IPR oversight).

Evaluation/coaching/counseling of ( charge nurse and preceptor role ) by managerial staff that are present and able to observe practice.

Monitors progress of new orientees, especially Nurse Internship Program.

Oversight of the IPR process e.g. rounds specifically focused on the design (report, huddles, pre-assignment of admission, reviewing documentation/plan of care, patient education, progressing the plan of care, preparing for d/c), safety, patient/family/care/partner satisfaction, needs and concerns.

Use of the manager status board to focus on meeting our quality measures (hf d/c instructions, vaccines, ca-uti, scip).

Fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, interpersonal and delegation skills to manage difficult situations e.g. multiple admissions at the same time, unstable patients, working short etc.

Engage staff fully in the processes.

Fully penetrate the off shift staff with information and gather feedback.

Concurrent coaching/counseling especially supervision of the PCA role (focus on RN delegation and coordination of dyad and team).

Responsible for performance appraisals for Evening and Night PCAs and Night RNs.

Fiscal responsibilities, adherence to staffing grids, Proactive prevention of incidental overtime

Facilitate off-shift implementation/evaluation of unit-based projects.

Oversee assignment planning and staff scheduling.

Cross coverage to clinical areas within Med-Surg Division.

Rounding with unit charge nurse and nursing supervisor.

Weekend coverage.


* 3-5 years acute care experience required.
* Currently licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State.
* Must meet the domains for RN IV or greater.
* National certification in specialty area within the first year.
* Previous management experience preferred.
* Minimum of BSN required (ex. BSN, MSN, or Doctorate in Nursing)
* National Nurse Manager Certification (Certification for Nurse Managers & Leaders, CNML, through AACN.org) required within 3 years of hire date
* NWH Leadership Academy graduation required within 2 years of hire date
