Job Description

Performs laboratory testing procedures in one or more specialty areas including but not limited to: Molecular, Microbiology, Blood Bank, Virology and/or Cytogenetics and independently performs clinical laboratory procedures and other tests relating to specialty laboratory assignment, i.e., Blood Bank, Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Stat Microbiology, etc. Provides training and guidance to department staff. Reviews and evaluates quality assurance and develops new techniques.

Responsibilities Include:

* Performs laboratory testing procedures in specialty laboratory and independently performs clinical laboratory procedures and other tests. Troubleshoots testing issues and resolves procedural difficulties.
* Provides guidance to technologists working in their respective areas.
* Delegates laboratory duties and ensures assignment completion.
* Serves as a technical expert and a resource to department staff.
* Trains technologists, clinical pathology residents, and student technologists in testing procedures and equipment operation.
* Supports and works with new orientees to demonstrate correct techniques and protocols.
* Demonstrates and explains the use of difficult or new techniques and equipment.
* Performs quality assurance activities that support the laboratory.
* Evaluates clinical problems and testing procedures. Proposes additional tests, drug effects, etc.
* Researches and reviews literature in order to ascertain quality control materials and procedures.
* Recommends instrumentation for purchase, with appropriate studies reflecting cost and quality issues.
* Prepares, updates and reviews technical policies and procedures.
* Assumes supervisory responsibilities on a relief basis, as needed.
* Assists supervisory staff in the preparation and presentation of regular in-service lectures for departmental staff.
* Performs related duties, as required.

Qualifications

* Bachelors of Science Degree, required.
* Licensed by New York State Education Department (NYSED) as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist (or as appropriate to area of assignment), required.
* Registered or eligible for registration with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC), preferred.
* Minimum of four (4) years clinical laboratory experience.
* OR
* Master's Degree in Clinical Chemistry, required.
* Licensed by New York State Education Department (NYSED) as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist (or as appropriate to area of assignment), required.
* American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) registration, required.
* Minimum of two (2) years clinical laboratory experience, required.
