A Day in the Life of a Design and Construction Intern

As a Co-op you will gain knowledge of Norfolk Southern's Design & Construction process working in a multifaceted support role under the guidance of an engineer. Responsibilities include surveying assistance, GIS infrastructure surveying assistance, design and rectifying crossing inventory database information with the latest GIS data. This includes the investigation and surveying of potential project sites, the subsequent preparation of comprehensive site development plans, and finally the construction phase of projects. Based on your degree path individuals will assume Co-op positions in the D&C Design Section. While individuals with specialized degrees may assume positions related to the Real Estate, GIS Mapping, Utility, or Architectural engineering areas of D&C.

What makes a successful Design & Construction Management Trainee?

* Self-motivated.
* Effective verbal communication and public speaking skills.
* Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
* Prior exposure through either position or course work to topographic surveying
* Prior exposure through either position or course work to preparation of engineering drawings using CAD (Microstation preferred).
* Ability and willingness to travel.


* Pursuing a Bachelor's/Master's Degree
* Preferred Degree Paths: Civil Engineering, GIS


* Freshman (27 or fewer credits) - $2,500/month
* Sophomore (28 to 59 credits) - $2,800/month
* Junior (60 to 89 credits) - $3,000 /month
* Senior (90 or more credits) - $3,300/month
* Graduate Student - $3,666/month
* Living stipend of $850/month is available to those who qualify.
