Overview

NYIT's Department of Life Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences has initiated a national search for a tenured Chairperson at the Associate/Full Professor rank.

The quickly growing Life Sciences Department of NYIT currently has 15 full time faculty and combines the disciplines of Biology and Chemistry. Our Long Island and New York City campuses have approximately 500 students majoring in biology, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, chemistry, and premed . The department also has joint responsibilities for combined undergraduate/graduate programs with the School of Health Professions; including Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Physician Assistant. The department is poised to play a critical and significantly expanded role in the future of NYIT and the administration is committed to provide appropriate future investments in faculty and facilities to help it fulfill this role.

Life Sciences faculty research interests are diverse, including medicinal and organic chemistry, neuroscience, cell and molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, virology, computational chemistry, analytical chemistry, epigenetics, and advanced sequencing technology development. Faculty in the Department of Life Sciences have ample opportunity to collaborate with faculty at the NYIT College of Engineering and Computer Sciences and the NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Responsibilities

This position will be full-time, tenure track at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. Applicants with expertise in any area of Biology or Chemistry will be considered.

As a member of the Life Sciences faculty, the Department Chair contributes to the work of the department through teaching, remaining active in scholarship, and through service activities. The Department Chair must capably supervise efficient course scheduling; manage complex budgets; promote development of personnel and facilities; coordinate curriculum development; and carry out other department leadership functions and other duties as assigned.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses appropriate to his/her area of expertise. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in scholarly activities which include undergraduate and/or graduate students in research. The pursuit of external funding is expected.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in Biology or Chemistry, with the experience and documented achievements appropriate for consideration of a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor; a record of effective teaching, service, and scholarly activity within the candidate's area of expertise; academic administrative experience; a passion for working with and mentoring faculty and students and fostering academic excellence; a proven interest in fostering interdisciplinary collaborations, and excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.
