Research Assistant -Severi/Soares Labs


Biological Sciences

Position Summary:

Performing basic molecular biology, behavior experimentation and analyses, animal care, keeping track of orders and maintaining laboratory stocks. Caring for zebrafish (Danio rerio) housed in the aquarium room in the Department of Biological Sciences.

Essential Functions:

1. Daily checking and recording of water quality parameters (pH, conductivity, etc).2. Coordinate with the PI and other lab members to ensure a daily feeding and health check schedule is maintained.3. Perform feeding, and observation/health checks of all of the animals.4. Additional cleaning, solution making, and general fishcare organizing (notifying the PI when stocks are low, maintaining clean common spaces, ensuring materials are organized) will be done as needed.5. Perform breeding as needed. Incumbent will be instructed by the PI how to safely handle the animals and eggs.

1. Will have an opportunity to screen transgenic larvae on a fluorescence dissecting scope and will be taught to recognize different transgenic lines based on their fluorescent pattern of expression.2. Will also have the opportunity to participate in ongoing research activities planned for the summer, such as building and testing a new behavior set up, lab meetings, journal clubs, spending time discussing research and fishcare best practices.

Prerequisite Qualifications:

1. Associates level or higher degree in Biology.2. Experience handling animals.




Special Instructions to Applicants:

Successful candidate will need to pass animal training if he/she has not already, and will be added to the IACUC protocol (once accepted).
