Supervising Nurse I (Mental Health Unit) Final Filing Date: 8/28/17

To assume shift responsibility for supervising the nursing staff and perform a full range of nursing and first-level administrative supervisory functions, and perform other related duties as required.

Significant Duties: 

• Participate in the following: (1) Preceptorship of the Mental Health Unit (MHU) staff, (2) Teaching in-services for the MHU staff, (3) Development of Learning Aids necessary for MHU patients, (4) Development and Review of the Policy and Procedures for nursing care of the MHU patient, and (5) Serve on Hospital Committees when MHU procedures and patients are to be discussed.

• Oversee the work of nursing personnel and instruct them in providing technical care such as the administration of drugs and the setup, regulation and monitoring of intravenous, mechanical breathing apparatus and other equipment.

• Verify that all nursing tasks and ordered medical or psychiatric treatments have been performed by nursing staff and that physicians' orders and order of other disciplines have been charted.

• Assess patient pain level and initiates pain management plan per NMC policy.

• Assess for sign and symptoms of abuse and assess educational needs of patient and patient support group.

• Coordinate and direct patient care to ensure patients' needs are met and hospital policies are followed to include admission, transfer, and discharge.

• Model effective communication skills, both verbal and written; interact with peers, physicians, other healthcare team members, patients, family and visitors in a safe, effective and therapeutic manner. Uses SBAR to communicate with physicians, residents, and other nursing staff.

• Provide direct patient care to MHU patients, evaluate outcomes of the procedures, and recognize emergencies and consults with other specialists as required; adjust nursing care processes as indicated.

• Assess the patient's physical, emotional, social and economic circumstances; make nursing rounds; determine if planned or required care has been provided; and make individual decisions and referral to other services for the patient's well-being; plan and conduct patient-centered staff conference.

• Assist the Nurse Director with supervising and overseeing the work of nursing personnel and operational unit activities; develop a written plan of care for the MHU patient; update as necessary for positive outcome.

• Investigate and answer queries from physicians, patients and family about MHU patient care; evaluate the effectiveness of quality measures implemented in MHU; provide instruction as necessary.

• Function as the charge nurse as assigned; documents in PCS including SOC.

• Provide resource information to other staff; including precepting and/orientation to the unit.

This incumbent, under direction, cooks and supervises other cooks in the preparation and serving of meals. 17/70K80/08CR

Examples of Duties:

• Plans, supervises and personally participates in menu creation, food preparation and meal service for patients, employees, visitors, and catered events.

• Monitors, evaluates and adjusts staffing levels to meet productivity needs.

• Performs daily sanitation/food safety audits, documenting and assigning fix for items not in compliance.

• Maintains quality, sanitary and procedural standards and policies, and inspects food served for compliance.

• Assist in scheduling work assignments.

• Keeps records and prepares reports.

• Participates in monthly meetings and in-services.

• Participates in new hire interviews, training, evaluations, and competency reviews.

• Assists in processing invoices, cash receipts, and maintaining change fund for cashiers.
