Job Description

Seeking full- or part-time graduate or highly qualified undergraduate interns to work with researchers in NREL’s Transportation Center on analysis of advanced vehicle and mobility technologies. Specific tasks may include:

  • Working with and analyzing large quantities of real-world travel activity and vehicle driving data, to potentially include fusion of multiple datasets and integration with high-performance computing resources.
  • Support with transportation/traffic modeling and/or advanced vehicle modeling.
  • Support developing, applying and validating models of consumer purchasing behavior for new vehicle technologies and/or mode choice behavior.
  • Application of real-world travel data to assess energy consumption of alternative vehicle technologies and charging requirements for electric vehicles.
  • Analyzing energy and mobility impacts from connected and automated vehicle technologies, transportation network companies (such as Uber and Lyft) and other new transportation options.
  • Gathering a variety of transportation and travel data through APIs and/or developing customized web scraping tools to gather required data.
  • Assisting with writing peer-reviewed publications and high-quality technical reports.


Basic QualificationsMust be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Desire a candidate who possesses:

  • Strong collaboration skills—thrives working in a collaborative team environment but is comfortable working independently when necessary.
  • Strong analytic, coding and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in one of more of the following software and programming languages: Python, JavaScript, Visual Basic, R, C/C++, Julia, MATLAB, HTML, CSS (and versatility to work with a variety of tools).

The ideal candidate would also possess at least some of the following qualifications:

  • Experience with data analytics, big data management, scraping data off the web, high-performance/distributed computing, machine learning and/or deep learning.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with behavior/choice modeling and/or logit functions.
  • Knowledge of vehicle powertrain modeling and/or energy analysis.
  • Knowledge of geospatial data analysis/visualization, web design, and/or engineering computing.
  • Knowledge of travel demand modeling, ITS, transportation and/or traffic simulation.
  • Strong writing and presentation skills.
  • Cumulative undergraduate/graduate GPA over 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
