Job Description

A undergraduate internship position is available in the Thermal Sciences Group of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL). This position will support research and development of the Gen3 and Gen2 concentrating solar power program at NREL. The candidate will, under supervision of the principal investigator and/or other researchers, perform experiments that are related to the chemistry and thermal property measurement of the heat transfer fluids and insulation materials.

The responsibility of the candidate includes:

1) operating equipment such as a differential scanning calorimeter and thermogravimetric analysis to characterize the heat capacity and thermal stability of the heat transfer fluids,

2) performing purification experiments for the heat transfer fluid following a prescribed protocol,

3) conducting chemical titration to determine impurity levels in the heat transfer fluid,

4) operating furnaces to characterize corrosion behaviors of metallic or ceramic materials in the heat transfer fluid,

5) operating optical microscope to characterize behaviors of materials after corrosion tests,

6) maintaining basic laboratory equipment to ensure smooth operation of the laboratory, etc.

Basic QualificationsMust be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
