Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado, is the nation's primary laboratory for research, development, and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The National Bioenergy Center at NREL has an opening for a full time Postdoctoral Researcher within the bio-separations group. The initial appointment is for one year, with possible renewal up to three years.

Successful candidates will have expertise and experience in designing, operating, and scaling novel separations processes. This position will focus on the design of innovative, cost-effective separations processes and specifically targeting chromatographic separations processes such as preparative liquid – liquid chromatography. The successful candidate will be able to:

  • work safely and independently in a laboratory setting
  • advise other researchers in the planning and execution of experimental work
  • communicate scientific results effectively, both written and oral
  • author peer-reviewed publications, and
  • work effectively in a large, multidisciplinary team of engineers, chemists, and biologists.

?This project involves investigating and developing Centrifugal Partitioning Chromatography (CPC) as a viable unit operation in commodity biorefining. Specifically, the post doctoral candidate will be responsible for developing CPC methods to purify valuable compounds from catalytic fast pyrolysis oil, lignin rich streams, and hydrothermal liquefaction oil. The candidate will also be responsible for overseeing work of interns, directing ASPEN modeling to quantify the energetic footprint of large scale CPC systems, and working with the theory group to computationally screen optimized solvent systems.


Basic QualificationsMust be a recent PhD graduate in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry or related field within the last three years.


Additional Qualifications

Research experience with an emphasis on separations processes and engineering.

  • Experience with centrifugal partitioning chromatography (CPC)
  • Experience in natural product extraction and purification
  • Experience with analytical chromatography (HPLC)
  • Experience of knowledge of preparative chromatography such as Simulated Moving Beds (SMB)
  • Knowledge of process modeling
  • Understanding of traditional purification techniques such as crystallization, distillation, and/or liquid-liquid extraction

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with preparatory-scale chromatography (simulated moving bed), fermentation, counter current chromatography
  • The desire to learn and develop new methods in preparative separations is highly desired
  • Knowledge of ASPENplus process modeling
  • Knowledge of COSMO-RS and MD simulations for estimating 2-phase solvent system physics
