Job Description

The Transportation and Hydrogen Systems Center and the Strategic Energy Analysis Center  at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher with experience in system-level modeling of complex systems, ideally  focusing on transportation systems and related infrastructure or electric power systems to join a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative team of analysts and modelers developing and applying state-of-the art models to conduct leading-edge analyses. The successful candidate would collaborate with a small team of researchers to develop a new class of multi-sector infrastructure models to explore emerging challenges in system evolution and operation, such as assessing the impact of electric vehicle on power system planning and operation.   

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and implement new advanced methods for solving infrastructure system modeling problems coupling multiple sectors
  • Research technology innovation, cross sector systems integration, mobility services, electric vehicle integration, policy and finance options and issues in system planning and operation; and consider how to implement them into infrastructure system models.
  • Undertake quality control to ensure analytical models are working appropriately.
  • Develop new data architectures to generically and flexibly describe infrastructure systems.
  • Acquire relevant data, evaluate for quality, process into a structure that is useful to the model.
  • Collaborate with analysts working on other modeling teams to relate inputs and outputs across models.
  • Design scenario ensembles for analysis projects, execute scenarios, and digest and interpret results to answer relevant questions.
  • Document results and disseminate insights in journal papers and conference presentations

Basic QualificationsMust be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.

Additional Required Qualifications

    Preferred Qualifications

    • At least 3 years of experience in developing and applying computational models of infrastructure systems and/or related markets,
    • Experience with applied optimization and/or simulation techniques,
    • Demonstrated strong computer programming skills including languages relevant to model development, optimization, and database analysis (Preferred languages: Julia and/or Python,
    • Exceptional written and oral communication and interpersonal skills,
    • Good knowledge of one or more infrastructure sectors and related policy and regulatory issues and general transportation analysis.
