Seeking full- or part-time GRAD and UNDER-GRAD interns to work with mobility researchers in NREL’s Transportation Center to conduct research on the mobility and energy impacts of emerging transportation technologies such as automated vehicles (AVs), and transportation networking companies (TNCs). Typical tasks may include:

  • Big data mining, analysis, visualization and interpretation
  • Developing statistical and machine learning models to understand the impacts of AVs and TNCs on transportation networks and travel behavior
  • Learn and assist with open source transportation modeling and simulation software to develop customized tools for assessing the mobility and energy impact of AVs and TNCs
  • Gather a variety of transportation/travel data through exiting APIs (Google, Uber, Lyft etc.) and/or develop customized web scraping tools to gather the required data
  • Additional project support as required by the center staff
  • Assist in writing publications and quality reports

Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills

Strong collaboration skills: thrive working in a collaborative team environment but comfortable working independently when necessary

Degrees/backgrounds of particular interest: civil engineering, transportation engineering, data science, computer science, urban planning, geography, statistics, public policy, and behavioral science

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Please Note: Before interview selection, you will need to provide unofficial transcripts to verify GPA and full time enrollment.


Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate would possess at least some of the following preferred qualifications:

  • Cumulative undergraduate/graduate GPA over 3.5 on a 4.0 scale (please provide on resume)
  • Strong background in big data analytics, machine learning or deep learning
  • Experience with high performance computing or distributed computing
  • Experience with GIS data and large GPS data analysis and visualization
  • Demonstrated knowledge in one of more of the following software and programming languages: Python, R, C, C++, MATLAB, HTML, CSS, JavaScript
  • Proficient written and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge of traffic demand modeling, ITS, traffic operation, and transportation simulation
  • Knowledge of transportation data analysis and simulation modeling software
  • Knowledge of geo-spatial data analysis, web design, and/or engineering computing
