Job Description

Applicants are invited to apply for a postdoctoral position in the Transportation and Hydrogen Systems Center’s Fuels and Combustion Science group to research fuel effects for both liquid and gaseous fuels on combustion performance. Combustion modes will include spark-ignition, conventional compression-ignition, and advanced combustion modes, and may include single-cylinder research engines and multi-cylinder engine. The research focuses on understanding how fuel physicochemical properties and fuel injection strategy impacts combustion phasing, efficiency, and emissions. This research is a component of the development of very low-carbon fuels and high-efficiency combustion strategies for the medium and heavy-duty transportation sector.

Job responsibilities include the following:

o Develop experimental plans and protocols for studies of fuel chemistry impacts on engine performance.

o Collaborate with engine laboratory team to set up engines and make them operational for research, including pressure, flow, temperature and other data acquisition measurements relevant as inputs to engine simulations and heat release rate analysis. Also set up and calibrate emissions measurement systems.

o Carry-out planned experiments working with the engine laboratory team acquiring high quality engine data.

o Perform basic engine simulations, interact with modeling and experimental collaborators at NREL and other institutions to analyze, model and discuss project results.

o Effectively communicate and interact with scientists and engineers to define the requirements of the simulations and models. Obtain necessary input data for simulations and provide meaningful interpretation of modeling results to guide experiments, operations, and engineering designs.

o Disseminate knowledge through publications in technical journals and presentations at conferences, symposia, and review meetings. Provide reports on technical work and input to technical publications and presentations.

o Work with management and senior staff to plan and design future potential projects, determine technical objectives, and interact with and provide regular project reports to government and/or industrial clients.

The successful candidate will have the following skills and experiences:

o Strong background in in engine combustion research, including development of combustion strategies, combustion analysis, and other research areas that go beyond emissions research.

o Familiarity with fuel properties and how they impact combustion and engine performance.

o Fluency in at least one scientific programming environment (Python/R/MATLAB), including techniques for data analysis on engine combustion results.

o Demonstrated experience in performing simulations studies that inform and collaborate with experimental projects.

o Ability to work independently and in teams to deliver high-quality results within aggressive timelines.

o Excellent technical writing, interpersonal, and communication skills.

o Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

o Recent (within past three years) PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field with a focus on engine combustion.

o Dedication to a safe and clean work environment.

Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.
