Job Description

NREL is seeking a Post Doc-level researcher to support energy resilience valuation and modeling in the Strategic Energy Analysis Center (SEAC). The center informs policy and investment decisions that lead to more resilient, reliable, and efficient energy systems. With objective, technology-neutral analysis, SEAC aims to increase understanding of energy policies, markets, resources, technologies, and infrastructure to address U.S. economic, security, and environmental priorities.

The incumbent will work under the guidance of senior staff to develop and apply methodologies for estimating value of resilience and integrating this value into energy decision tools and analysis. This will include estimating value of lost load or customer damage function across a range of benchmark building types, developing a calculator to estimate value of lost load for specific customer sites, evaluating how value of lost load varies with the percent of critical load met, developing process guides for customer damage function development, and demonstrating the processes developed on case study sites. The incumbent will also explore methods for combining the value of lost load at individual buildings into a node-level value to inform distribution and transmission system operator decisions. The incumbent will work with laboratory staff and laboratory partners including utilities and RTOs. The incumbent will document and present results, including publishing results in technical reports, conference papers, or journal articles.

The successful candidate will have experience in energy resilience modeling and resilience metrics, with a background in engineering or economics and strong programming skills. Expertise in economic analysis, preferably resilience economics. Some knowledge of energy efficiency or renewable energy technologies Excellent communication and teamwork skills. Ability to collaborate with team members in a flexible work environment. Ability to work independently. High standards of work quality. Intellectually curious, analytical, able to design research projects and support research projects designed by senior staff. Adaptable to a variety of roles and projects.


Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Fluency in Python and ability to quickly pick up other languages
  • Experience building techno-economic models
  • Optimization software experience
