Job Description

Job Summary:

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is seeking a qualified Postdoctoral Researcher (or equivalent) with experience/interest in system-level engineering and techno-economic modeling of transportation and/or energy systems, with particular focus on the power grid. The successful candidate will be part of a strategic NREL initiative to conceive and develop models and tools a the intersection of transportation and energy systems to evaluate transformative scenarios and inform decision makers on the energy and emissions implications of different potential futures. In creating the model, the successful candidate will play a key role within a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative team of analysts and modelers with experience developing and implementing state-of-the art system models to conduct leading-edge analyses. Candidate who recently received a PhD or with equivalent experience will be considered.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to conceiving, developing, and implementing novel methods to model complex systems.
  • Implement new structures and algorithms into models.
  • Develop new data architectures that can be flexibly applied to complex systems.
  • Apply cross-domain analytical tools to evaluate technology interactions at relevant timescales.
  • Contribute to a portfolio of scenario analyses evaluating the impacts of technological change, regulation, and policies on transportation system evolution, including transformative changes such as deep electrification, impacts of connectivity and automation, and major energy policies.
  • Design scenario ensembles for analysis projects, execute scenarios, digest and interpret results for reporting.
  • Contribute to writing papers for top-quality peer-reviewed journals and present work at leading conferences.
  • Assist in developing external funding proposals for extension of the work and application of the developed model.

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in developing and analyzing large simulation/optimization problems for scenario analysis
  • Proven expertise in high performance scientific computing using Python and/or Julia or similar
  • Innovative and out-of-the-box thinker.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of data visualization tools and version control software.
  • Experience using mathematical optimization software (e.g., GAMS and JuMP) on large simulation/optimization problems for scenario analysis
  • Demonstrated experience with relevant transportation and energy systems simulation tools. Examples include NEMS, MoMo, GCAM, other integrated assessment models, and/or other similar tools.
  • Proven track record of high-quality publications in peer-reviewed journals and conferences is a plus.
  • Experience with data synthesis or big data methods and tools is a plus.
  • Experience using high-performance, cloud, or parallelized computing platforms to solve technical problems is a plus.
