Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado, is the nation’s primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. NREL is leading several projects on developing exascale-capable, high-fidelity computational modeling of wind farms, engine combustion, etc. There is an immediate opening in the Computational Science Center for a post-doctoral researcher in developing overset methodologies for adaptlive mesh refinement (AMR) solvers coupled to near-body unstructured solvers to model complex geometries. The post-doctoral researcher will work in a large multi-lab, multi-disciplinary team developing and demonstrating high-fidelity time-domain simulations for different renewable energy problems.

The post-doctoral researcher will work with senior NREL researchers in developing/improving a coupled high-fidelity solver and demonstrate it on either wind farm simulations or engine combustion problems. The researcher will be part of a large multi-lab team that has funding through DOE Office of Science/NNSA Exascale Computing Project. Primary duties will be developing a baseline simulation capability by coupling AMReX to an unstructured or curvilinear structured near-body solver, improving the accuracy and performance of the baseline coupled simulations, and demonstrating it on relevant energy problems.


Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) on next-generation platforms
  • Experience with AMReX (or similar AMR technologies)
  • Experience working with overset mesh methodologies
  • Experience with hybrid parallel-programming models
  • Expertise in modern software engineering methods
  • Experience with C++
  • Established publication record in peer-reviewed journals
