Job Description

The Power Systems Operations and Controls group (PSOC) at NREL is looking for an innovative and enthusiastic engineer with a positive attitude and excellent collaboration skills to join our cutting-edge research team. The ideal candidate will conduct research in the area of power system operations with high penetration of renewables by developing hybrid multi-timescale simulation platform of power system that provides the insight on interaction between second/minute-level grid dynamic and minute/hour/day-level grid scheduling.

The ideal candidate will bring experience in the modeling and simulation of electricity market including Security Constrained Unit Commitment (SCUC) and Security Constrained Economic Dispatch (SCED), as well as familiarity with optimization techniques such as MIP, LP and stochastic optimization.

This project will involve 1) developing new electricity market products to incent renewables providing kinds of ancillary services. 2) integrating the scheduling model with dynamic modeling of bulk system with renewables that may include wind power generation, photovoltaics, battery energy storage system, pumped storage hydro, etc.

The successful candidate will be part of the ESOC group under the Power Systems Engineering Center (PSEC) at NREL. PSEC supports the science and technology goals of the U.S. Department of Energy and NREL toward a sustainable energy future. The center works with the electricity industry to optimize strategies for effectively interconnecting renewable resources and emerging energy efficiency technologies in the existing electric power system. The center focuses on resolving grid integration barriers and providing improved control and management strategies for increased grid flexibility, consumer empowerment, and transportation electrification.

  • Work independently to investigate and/or conduct, test, and document research and experiments
  • Publish results in top technical journals/conference proceedings
  • Present work at conferences, symposia, and review meetings
  • Follow all Environmental, Safety, and Health policies and procedures to ensure and maintain a safe working environment

  • Relevant PhD or PhD candidate in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science engineering or other related engineering fields.

Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

  • Experience with technical computer-based simulations, ideally in energy systems (see additional preferred qualifications below)
  • Experience with computer programming or software development
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)


Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced modeling expertise in various power systems modeling, e.g. Python, Matlab, GAMS or C++.
  • Proficient in electricity market modeling including SCUC and SCED.
  • Familiarity with the model of renewables, energy storage and the ISO’s electricity market model
  • Strong background in medium/large power systems operation and analysis, such as power flow, dynamics and control, stability, etc.
  • Basic capability of data processing and signal processing.
  • Demonstrated experience in preliminary project management and excellent client interactions on real-world engineering projects. Collaborative experience with industrial would be an added advantage.
  • Experience in proposal writing to secure grants
  • Excellent writing and communication skills. Ability to write professional and technical reports.
  • Ability to present the technical results to the technical peers and non-technical industrial customer.
