Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado is the nation’s primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.

A postdoctoral position is available in NREL’s Chemistry and Nanoscience Center to work in the area of Electrons to Molecules, specifically in the fabrication and testing of CO2 electroreduction device architectures that are similar to commercial polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolyzers.This position will primarily focus on evaluating CO2 electrolyzers that perform gas-phase CO2 reduction at the cathode and alkaline water oxidation at the anode and investigating how device-level modifications impact thermodynamic and kinetic levers that control product selectivity at the cathode. The candidate will be responsible for the fabrication of membrane electrode assemblies, experimental design, in-situ electrochemical testing, and the subsequent interpretation of the electrochemical performance to quantify and elucidate the electrochemical kinetics and transport losses in operating bipolar membrane electrolyzers.

An acceptable candidate should have an understanding of electrochemical processes and diagnostics of electrochemical (electrolyzer/fuel cell) devices, such as but not limited to:

  • AC impedance diagnostics relevant to membrane and electrode proton transport
  • Surface area measurements such as hydrogen underpotential deposition and electrochemical carbon monoxide stripping
  • Diffusion limiting current measurements relevant to gas transport both in the bulk electrode and near the electrocatalyst surface
  • Kinetic measurements of electrode performance and knowledge of electrochemical kinetic modeling

In general, candidates should have a demonstrated track record of success in addressing fundamental and applied science questions and devising solutions to challenging problems.


Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.


Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in chemistry, materials science & engineering, mechanical engineering. Record of publications/presentations in areas related to electrochemical energy storage/utilization such as CO2 reduction, electrolyzers, and/or fuel cells.

Qualified candidates should demonstrate considerable skill in interpreting and assessing experimental results. Finally, excellent interpersonal as well as oral and written communication skills are essential for success at NREL.
