Job Description

NREL's Building Energy Sciences group has an opening for a post-doctoral position on materials and thermal storage science for buildings application such as envelopes and HVAC systems. The successful candidate will join team members on cutting-edge laboratory and analytical projects to synthesize, develop, characterize, and evaluate materials for low temperature thermal energy storage, components, and systems to be integrated in buildings components and applications.

The successful candidate should have a strong background and understanding of physics and fundamentals of materials heat transfer, phase transformations behavior. Phase change materials (PCM) for solid-solid and/or solid-liquid transformations are of interest in inorganic and/or organic systems.

The key duties of this position include:

  • Synthesize single or composite low-temperature PCMs, with an emphasis on organic or inorganic systems
  • Perform PCM encapsulation in matrices/foams or using the core-shell approaches
  • Enhancement of thermal properties including latent heat and thermal conductivity
  • Improvement of nucleation of new phases to eliminate sub-cooling of phase transformations
  • Measuring of thermal contact resistances as well as their minimization
  • Perform materials thermophysical properties measurements required for thermal energy storage
  • If encapsulation of PCM is required, the candidate must be able of determining the perfect candidates as well as performing the encapsulation of the PCM
  • Setup and perform laboratory experiments of thermal components and systems
  • Characterize pre-, in situ, and post-testing using state-of-the-art materials characterization tools. These analytical techniques are, but not limited to: chemical, thermal, physical, mechanical, and metallography at the micro-, and macro-scale
  • Collaborate with materials scientists, experimentalists and modeling teams
  • Collaborate in the development of research proposals and new scientific initiatives
  • Write regular progress reports, publish journal papers in both fundamental science journals and applied technology journals, and present at conferences
  • Participate in professional scientific activities, e.g., reviews of papers, research proposals, etc.
  • Publish papers in materials engineering and science, heat transfer, buildings applications, renewable energy, and/or energy-related peer reviewed journals

As an individual researcher the duties are:

  • Understand the physicochemical synthesis of materials
  • Stablish fundamental physicochemical-sound mechanisms of phase transformations for low temperature highly energetic thermal storage
  • Optimize test setups, and characterization tools for reliable data collection


Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.
