Job Description

The Energy Security and Resiliency (ESR) center at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is seeking a data analytics and security researcher with strong practical skills in data analytics, predictive modeling, and cybersecurity, to help the center in its research and development in cybersecurity and resiliency. The candidate will be expected to conduct research to design, develop and implement new tools that apply advanced algorithms to address the existing and emerging data and cybersecurity needs of the distributed energy resources. The candidate should be able to apply analytical and numerical methods, statistics and machine learning, and have a strong experience in conducting extensive and/or comprehensive literature reviews. The candidate must also demonstrate a wide skillset in working with different programming languages such as Python, R, Java, MATLAB, C++, etc., and should have a strong understanding of the architectures for data analytics and management, and cybersecurity for cyber-physical systems. The candidate should also be capable of assisting in conceptualizing and building/revising research and development proposals for state and federal agencies as well as private sectors in interdisciplinary areas such as data management, smart grid, cybersecurity, networking, and communications.

NREL’s Cyber Security and Resilience center is focused on meeting needs to improve security and resilience of the U.S. energy infrastructure. This Center works directly with the electric utility sector, the renewable energy sector, energy and security technology vendors and integrators, the Department of Energy, Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, and other federal agencies with missions critical to the nation’s energy security interests.

Job Duties

The postdoctoral researcher will provide technical support in building and growing research capabilities of ESR center to support emerging needs for securing the power grid, Distributed Energy Resources (especially renewable energy sector) and other technologies that are part of grid modernization.

Specific duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Ability to model and formulate mathematical models for developing predictive algorithms and data analytic methods
  • Ability to apply programming languages such as Python, R, JavaScript, Visual basic, C++, ASP.NET on different networking and security related use cases
  • Ability to work with programming environments such as MATLAB, Octave, NetBeans/Eclipse
  • Work with other researchers of the group on center’s existing and upcoming research projects
  • Conduct world-class, high-quality research and development and publish results in high impact journals as appropriate
  • Work towards developing new cybersecurity frameworks and analytic algorithms that help the center grow its technical portfolio

Preferred Education and Experience

Relevant PhD degree or master’s degree with 2 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. General knowledge and application of engineering technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques. Training in team, task or project leadership responsibilities. Intermediate abilities and knowledge of practices and techniques. Good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience in publishing high quality research in high impact journals.
  • Demonstrated experience in using programming languages and tools for building data analytic and predictive models to solve cybersecurity use cases
  • Demonstrated experience in formulating algorithms and software for systems and application security
  • Adequate familiarity with firewalls, intrusion detection systems, Cisco networking technologies, TCP/IP networking design and routing protocols
  • Should have great oral and written communication skills
  • Should have excellent organizational skills
  • Good team player and collaboration experience
