Job Description

This internship will aid in the analysis of power systems modeling results for the Interconnections Seam study, a project in the DOE’s Grid Modernization Program. The intern will analyze results from various scenarios and sensitivities conducted using the Production Cost Model, PLEXOS. Familiarity with production cost models and modern power systems analysis are a must. Additional familiarity with the NREL WindToolkit and NSRDB are required. A few of the types of datasets the intern might work with include load, wind, and solar time series data; generation mix, hydro, and transmission data. Candidates are expected to have an initial understanding of power system or other relevant energy modeling; US power markets at the wholesale level; and completed course work or other tasks that required the use of programming languages such as Python, R, GAMS, Matlab, etc. Interns are expected to work independently and collaboratively to develop creative solutions for modeling problems. Exceptional written and verbal communications are a must. Successful interns often co-author reports with NREL staff and sometimes author their own peer reviewed publications.


Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Please Note: Before interview selection, you will need to provide unofficial transcripts to verify GPA and full time enrollment.
