Job Description

NREL’s National Bioenergy Center is conducting research to improve biomass conversion to fuels and chemicals, particularly on biomass pretreatment, lignin valorization, chemical catalyst design, and chemical separations of bioproducts fermentation broth and biomass pretreatment streams. The successful candidate will be responsible for synthesizing and purifying model compounds, separating and purifying compounds from fermentation broths or other catalytic streams, and synthesizing and characterizing polymers.

An ability to conduct laboratory experiments, sometimes with minimal supervision, with the utmost regard to safety is required. Ideal candidate will be detail and safety-oriented, a fast learner, and have the ability to follow established experimental protocols. An ability to learn new techniques is required.

Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering or related discipline with a strong desire to work in a laboratory setting and gain experience in biofuels research is preferred.


Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Please Note: Before interview selection, you will need to provide unofficial transcripts to verify GPA and full time enrollment.


Preferred Qualifications

Prior internships where work was conducted in a laboratory environment and familiarity with relevant analytical methods (flash chromatography, GC-MS and LC-MS) and chemical synthesis techniques are desirable, but not required.
