Job Description

Using experimental data captured using onboard data logging devices on vehicles in the field and in the laboratory, the candidate will work with senior staff to investigate the behavior of advanced technology vehicles in fleets across the country. Working with test data, the candidate will help validate and improve existing models and provide analysis support for project objectives. The candidate will work with on-road medium and heavy-duty vehicles that make use of new technologies such as fuel cells, hybrid drivetrains, all-electric drivetrains, autonomous controls, and alternative fuels to enable the accelerated development and deployment of advanced technologies.

Help with data collection efforts at test sites, installing and operating on-board vehicle data acquisition equipment, performing analysis through simulation and modeling, visualizing data, provide support in laboratory test activities of vehicles operated in fleets around the country. Perform analysis on experimental data using existing Matlab based tools/models and Python code. Assist in developing low cost data logging.

Education and Experience: Junior or Senior level undergraduate

Knowledge, Skills and Attributes: Limited use and application of engineering principles, theories and concepts.

Good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to use various computer software programs. Knowledge of vehicle networks, raspberry pi computers, understanding of python coding language.

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Attributes: Background in vehicle data collection and instrumentation. Experience with computer programming and application of computer models is also necessary. In particular, experience using Microsoft Excel, Python and Matlab as numerical analysis tools. Strong interpersonal communication skills. Ability to work both independently and with a team as needed.


Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Please Note: Before interview selection, you will need to provide unofficial transcripts to verify GPA and full time enrollment.


Preferred Qualifications

The ideal applicant possesses skills in MATLAB, Python and Excel in addition to an understanding of physics/dynamics and analysis of experimental data captured through electronic data acquisition methods. Vehicle testing and instrumentation experience a plus. Knowledge of OBD CAN signals and GPS as well as previous experience with programing raspberry-pi computers is valuable.
