Job Description

The HPC Systems & Operations Group in the Computational Science Center (CSC) is seeking a full-time (40 hours per week) graduate engineering summer intern. The graduate intern will work with HPC (high performance computing) operations staff on a variety of projects involving NREL's HPC data center. This data center was designed to be one of the most energy-efficient data centers in the world. Using best-in-class technologies, the data center serves as a showcase facility for demonstrating data center energy efficiency. Possible summer projects include: develop understanding of our data center hydronic system in order to contribute content to a data center efficiency white paper, investigate facility maintenance approaches for data centers including energy centered maintenance, gain operational experience with various warm water liquid cooling systems to assist in evaluation, help develop standards around network cabling practices in our data center, and help with installation activities of a new HPC system.

Must have experience or be willing to learn how to read mechanical and electrical construction drawings. CAD experience a plus. The graduate intern must be willing to physically work with data center hardware. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team required. All work will require adherence to NREL’s Safety Program.

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Please Note: Before interview selection, you will need to provide unofficial transcripts to verify GPA and full time enrollment.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with strong interest in data center energy efficiency and liquid cooling of electronics. Previous data center work experience would be advantageous, as well as a strong desire to work in the data center industry.

Submission Guidelines

Please note that in order to be considered an applicant for any position at NREL you must submit an application form for each position for which you believe you are qualified.
