Job Description

Work within NREL’s Energy Systems Integration Facility Operations Engineering Team to operate, upgrade and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and systems in support of energy systems research projects. Duties may include:

  • Basic installations and electrical power circuit fabrication, low voltage wiring
  • Controls programming using LabVIEW, Matlab Simulink or machine programming
  • Schematic drawing using Visio or CAD
  • Bill of materials development for projects


Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Please Note: Before interview selection, you will need to provide unofficial transcripts to verify GPA and full time enrollment.


Preferred Qualifications

Understanding of analog circuits and power systems, command of computing packages Matlab Simulink, LabVIEW, PLC programming, DSP programming. Knowledge of pertinent controls and power system communications protocols (Modbus, DNP, CAN, IEC 61850).

The selected candidate will gain hands on experience with grid simulating power supplies, inverters and generators. Successful candidates have working knowledge of electrical power circuits and systems, analog circuits, utility grid power flow and control, and electronic control systems. Additional experience and knowledge in information technology, communications, and advanced programming is preferred.
