Job Description

Work within NREL’s Energy Systems Integration Facility Operations Engineering Team to operate, upgrade and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and systems in support of energy systems research projects. Duties may include:

  • Gaseous (hydrogen, methane) pressurized piping/tubing, device selection, installation and control
  • Fluid (water-thermal, liquid fuel) handling, heat exchangers, control devices selection and installation, combined heat and electrical plants
  • Mechanical system process control integration using programming and PLC interfaces
  • Process handling system conception and design for chemical research
  • Using CAD software for drawings

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Please Note: Before interview selection, you will need to provide unofficial transcripts to verify GPA and full time enrollment.

Preferred Qualifications

Heat transfer design, mechanics of high pressure gas systems, use of electrically controllable devices, computer aided drawing experience (AutoCAD, solidworks), mechanical/thermal data acquisition, any communications protocol or IT systems knowledge.

The selected candidate will gain hands on experience with generator machines and thermal handling systems. Successful candidates have working knowledge of gas/fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, chemical processes and automation skills. Additional experience and knowledge of PLC machine programming, electrical power circuits and systems, and/or communications and information technology is preferred.
