Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado, is the nation’s primary laboratory for research, development and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. NREL’s Strategic Energy Analysis Center has an opening for a graduate level student internship during Summer 2018, focusing on statistical analysis of adoption of rooftop solar by low and moderate-income households in California.

A successful candidate will have experience in all of the following areas: Development of models using statistical and supervised machine learning methods, Development of spatio-temporal statistical models, Familiarity with low-income solar policy in California, Familiarity with energy affordability issues affecting low-income households.

Duties will include data collection, statistical analysis, evaluating various statistical specifications, analyzing model results, and collaborating with senior staff to develop one or more publications based on research findings.

Moderate literature review and data collection efforts. Evaluate different statistical and supervised machine learning specifications. Analyze results of statistical models to understand trends in low-income solar adoption at the individual and aggregate level. Strong writing skills and the ability to work independently with periodic supervision. Collaborate with senior staff to evaluate results and develop journal article(s).

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Please Note: Before interview selection, you will need to provide unofficial transcripts to verify GPA and full time enrollment.

Python or R programming experience along with experience developing statistical models
