Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the world’s leading research and development laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies, is seeking to hire a post- doctoral candidate in mechanical engineering, building science, materials science, or a related field with expertise in heat transfer for building technologies.

The candidate will work with other engineers and scientists in the Building Energy Science Group within the Buildings & Thermal Sciences Center. The primary responsibility will be developing new concepts and conducting modeling and experimental research and development activities aimed at improving building thermal performance. Work carried out will support R&D activities within the Building Technologies Program that are conducted internally at NREL and externally by industry and university participants. The candidate will work under direct supervision on assigned activities.

Duties

The successful candidate will perform research aimed at improving the performance of buildings. Specific areas of interest include the development of novel materials, components, and systems that improve the static and dynamic performance of buildings. This position requires knowledge of building energy science, building physics, heat transfer, and advanced materials. Basic work responsibilities will include developing design, performance, and cost models of new building materials and components and experimental design and data collection based on these concepts.

The successful candidate will have completed coursework or have demonstrated experience related to heat transfer, thermal engineering, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and building energy science. Relevant experience includes building energy modeling and experimental design and data collection. Assumed responsibilities include close attention to documenting work in detailed technical records, maintaining clean and safe work conditions, conducting work with the highest professional standards, and publishing high-impact factor, peer-reviewed journal papers, and presenting results at scientific conferences.

Requirements

This position requires a Ph.D. preferably in Mechanical Engineering, Building Science, Architectural Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field of study. Demonstrated experience in thermal-system simulation and modeling is required. Proficiency with programming languages, Python, Matlab, C++, Visual Basic, and Engineering Equation Solver (EES) is preferred. Proficiency with building energy modeling tools such as EnergyPlus, TRNSYS, and Modelica is also preferred.

The successful candidate will have a track record of research and publications in thermal-system modeling, experimental design and operation, and building energy science. Modeling experience involving building envelopes is desired. Knowledge of phase-change and thermal energy storage technologies and insulation materials is beneficial.

The candidate must demonstrate a research capability to solve challenging problems, work effectively in teams as well as independently, have excellent interpersonal, communication, writing and documentation skills. This position requires creativity, innovation, and adaptability.

Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.

Desired experience in:

  • Characterization and modeling of heat transfer in nanostructured materials
  • Experience in measurement of heat transfer in novel materials using such methods as

    • Transient Plane Source
  • Experience with materials synthesis and processing
