Job Summary:

The Commercial Buildings Research Group at NREL investigates ways for buildings to save energy. The group develops building energy modeling software (EnergyPlus and OpenStudio), performs R&D for energy efficient technologies, and develops design strategies for zero energy ready buildings. The group is looking for an Intern who will research, develop, test, and validate automated fault detection and diagnosis (AFDD) algorithms.

Building faults, or malfunctions in the building’s systems (i.e. HVAC, envelope, lighting controls) lead to energy waste and higher than necessary energy costs for building owners. NREL and its partners are developing hybrid AFDD algorithms for small commercial buildings that leverage physics-based modeling and machine learning methods. The intern will perform a variety of tasks related to research and development of AFDD algorithms, including but not limited to:

Investigation of the applicability of fault types/models to specific building types Investigation of potential target markets for model-based AFDD, including market barriers Execution of validation experiments for model-based and data-driven AFDD algorithms Exploration of novel methodologies to improve the AFDD performance The results from the summer project will inform the tech-to-market strategy for the AFDD platform.

The intern should be prepared to perform ancillary tasks related to the AFDD project. There is also potential for expanded work in AFDD or Commercial Buildings Research. The intern’s research could change based on client or project needs.

The successful candidate will be a Master or Ph.D. student or recent graduate in an Engineering or Mathematics field. The candidate will have proven data analysis skills. The successful candidate will contribute to journal publications.


Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Please Note: Before interview selection, you will need to provide unofficial transcripts to verify GPA and full time enrollment.
