Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) National Center for Photovoltaics (NCPV) has an immediate opening for a part-time graduate student in Golden, Colorado. The Reliability group within the NCPV is investigating the safety and durability of PV modules and of power electronics components in the PV system. Module field failure along with wiring and interconnect failures may be detected through the use of Spread-Spectrum Time Domain Reflectometry (SSTDR) methods. Evaluation and development of existing and new techniques will greatly aid the application of SSTDR to the PV industry, possibly resulting in new products or measurement techniques.

This posting is for a temporary (~3-month) summer internship position.


• Assist in the detection and analysis of field failure modes through the use of SSTDR detection circuitry

• Develop trade studies and market analyses for the deployment of diagnostic equipment to industry

• Communicate effectively with mentor about the expected work, progress toward completing that work, and any issues in completing the work as planned.

• Be trained in laboratory and electrical safety procedures and follow these consistently.


Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Please Note: Before interview selection, you will need to provide unofficial transcripts to verify GPA and full time enrollment.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Signal processing and impedance analysis for SSTDR systems
  • Solar Photovoltaic field reliability and measurement

  • Programming experience (Python, etc.)

  • Teamwork and ability to communicate within the team
