Job Description

NREL is seeking an engineering intern to assist in the design and build of configurable cybersecurity use cases for use at the Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF). The intern will co-author and perform security (penetration) testing plans in support of research projects conducted at ESIF. The intern will work with ESIF cybersecurity research staff to accomplish these responsibilities. All work will require adherence to NREL’s Safety Program.

  • Ability to build out network systems.
  • Ability to write code (Python, Java, C++)
  • Proven experience carrying out independent research
  • Strong written, communication and presentation skills
  • Good team player and collaboration experience
  • Proven experience in participating in industry workshops and conferences

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution.
Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation.
Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with TCIP, routing & switching, and penetration testing principles, and hands-on work preferred. Experience performing penetration tests and knowledge about malware, phishing schemes, and intrusion detection systems for IT and ICS. Must be able to write technical design descriptions using Microsoft Word. Background in reading electrical construction drawings. Cisco certification (i.e. CCNA) or similar preferred. Experience with network installation, troubleshooting and design. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team required.
