Job Description

Job Summary

Develop mathematical frameworks for understanding uncertainty in advanced building controls, and then use them to evaluate multiple appliances/building components to determine guidelines for model fidelity for Grid-Integrated Efficient Buildings use cases. The current project will support NREL’s building controls and energy system integration research, using existing and emerging software approaches. The research may also evaluate how model selection should change under dynamic or market-driven controls, such as transactive energy and/or blockchain-based coordination.

Project tasks include: Develop appliance models of different fidelities based on literature approaches and first principles where appropriate. Exercise the models and examine how input uncertainties propagate in chance-constrained optimization. Establish metrics for evaluating different models based on computational cost, quality of representing real-life outputs, and the limits each provides to the system-level resulting uncertainty. Publish papers where appropriate.

Follow all Environment, Safety, and Health policies and procedures to ensure and maintain a safe working environment.

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Please Note: Before interview selection, you will need to provide unofficial transcripts to verify GPA and full time enrollment.
