The Residential Buildings Research Group is seeking a Summer Intern to work on data analysis and visualization of large-scale building energy simulation data. The intern will work with NREL Residential Building Research Engineers to aggregate and visualize savings potential and cost savings of energy upgrades to the residential housing stock. The intern will also have the opportunity to work with and merge datasets including simulated energy use, utility billing data, home energy audit data, and survey data from homes around the country to develop insights. The intern will assist NREL Engineers to create a web-based query and visualization platform from the analysis.

Job duties and responsibilities may include:

  • Developing Python code to query and analyze residential buildings data
  • Developing visualizations of queried data
  • Writing a report and documentation of analysis


  • Excellent communication skills are required.
  • Background in mathematics, statistics, engineering, computer science, or related fields is required.
  • Familiarity with programming and data analysis, in languages such as Python, R, SQL, C, C++, or similar is required.
  • Familiarity with relational databases and SQL is preferred.
  • Some familiarity with front end web development (HTML, JavaScript, CSS) is preferred.


Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Please Note: Before interview selection, you will need to provide unofficial transcripts to verify GPA and full time enrollment.
