Job Description

NREL Site Operations is seeking a motivated facilities electrical engineer intern who will be responsible for power distribution design support. NREL desires an intern with a background in electrical power to assist in maintaining and improving NREL’s facilities in support of NREL’s mission.

The intern will support the NREL campus facilities electrical engineer and work on multiple projects concurrently at NREL’s two main research campuses. The ideal candidate will have knowledge and interest in power distribution design and associated electrical modeling software for facilities and research projects. The intern will work in a research and development laboratory environment conducive to learning and career enhancement. The candidate will need to collaborate with other architects and engineers.

As the Facilities Electrical Engineer Intern, you will assist in the development of facilities electrical and technology/data projects on a research campus. Knowledge or interest in construction project administration methods is essential to assist NREL’s facility engineering group in the execution of small and larger campus projects. The intern will work with and assist the electrical engineer and facilities CAD team to assure that the project electrical design and associated construction documentation conform to NREL ‘s requirements and applicable building codes. Field work is an essential part of the intern’s role. The Facilities Electrical Engineer Interns key responsibilities are:

  • Maintain/update the campus electrical model.
  • Assist in maintaining NREL’s electrical studies using the existing database,
  • Perform minor system updates to short circuit, arc flash, coordination studies using SKM, and may include field surveys.
  • Provide CAD assistance including record keeping and organization of electrical drawings and as-built drawings using AutoCAD
  • Participate in project technical review and updates
  • Perform construction field surveys of electrical conditions and document using AutoCAD.
  • Assist the facilities electrical engineer in selecting and specifying electrical equipment systems.
  • Assist in updating design standards related to facilities electrical systems.
  • Interpret and apply codes, job procedures, standards, and specifications.
  • Interface with other engineering design disciplines.
  • Provide field assistance as required.
  • Monitor and review on-site installation, start-up and operation of electrical projects.
  • Develop simple control panel designs
  • Select and specify instruments racks and designs in support of research projects.
  • Assist in preparing project electrical specifications and summaries for front end design packages
  • Work with the facilities electrical engineer to develop project drawings for electrical layouts, schematics and installation details
  • Review vendor drawings
  • Support construction, project checkout and startup

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Please Note: Before interview selection, you will need to provide unofficial transcripts to verify GPA and full time enrollment.
