Job Description

NREL is seeking a Post-Doctoral Researcher that has strong theoretical and practical skills in cybersecurity. The Post-Doctoral Researcher will be expected to perform cyber governance assessments of organizations to identify and mitigate the business process risks based on the Department of Energy Cybersecurity Capability Maturity Model (C2 M2) and National Institute Science & Technology (NIST) Cybersecurity Framework. The Post-Doctoral Researcher will be expected to perform cyber penetration testing on the NREL Energy Systems Integration Facility R&D infrastructure to identify and mitigate cyber risks by hardening the hardware and software based applications and networks. The Post-Doctoral Researcher will also perform cyber penetration and data fuzz testing at client sites and determine the gaps relative to the 9-layer cybersecurity reference architecture developed at NREL’s Cyber-Physical Systems Security & Resilience Center. The Post-Doctoral Researcher will help NREL and its clients scan and harden their software (source code and executables) against cyberattacks. The Post-Doctoral Researcher will assist in the development of R&D proposals in cybersecurity and resilience for State and Federal Agencies as well as the private sector and support the research work after NREL is awarded the R&D projects. The Post-Doctoral Researcher will be expected to make technical presentations in client meetings as well as professional workshops, seminars and conferences. The Post-Doctoral Researcher will also be expected to lead cybersecurity awareness training classes at NREL and at client sites. The Post-Doctoral Researcher will also develop technical reports that will be published from NREL as well as other industry publishing outlets. All work will require adherence to NREL’s Safety Program.

  • Ability to build out network systems.

  • Proven experience carrying out independent research
  • Strong written, communication and presentation skills
  • Good team player and collaboration experience
  • Proven experience in participating in industry workshops and conferences
  • Familiarity with:

  • Anti-Virus (e.g. Symantec, MacAfee)
  • Pen testing tools
  • Symantec
  • Firewalls (e.g. Checkpoint, Cisco, Juniper Networks)
  • Cisco networking technologies
  • TCP/IP Network design
  • Routing Protocols (e.g. IGRP, OSPF, BGP)
  • Systems Integration
  • Syslog


Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.
