Job Description

The High Performance Algorithms and Complex Fluids Group in the Computational Science Center (CSC) is seeking a full-time (40 hours per week) summer intern. The intern will use PeleC, a computational fluid mechanics (CFD) code under development by NREL, to simulate fluid flow and heat transfer of supercritical carbon dioxide in advanced energy systems. The candidate will work as a member of NREL’s computational fluid dynamics group using Perergine, NREL’s supercomputer, to perform these simulations. Daily responsibilities will include thermal and fluid flow analysis, computer programming, and data analysis. The candidate will also work with the team to prepare the results for presentation at appropriate conferences and publication in scientific journals.

Must have completed undergraduate courses in fluid mechanics and heat transfer. Experience in numerical programming using C++, Fortran, Matlab, Python, or similar programming languages. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team required.


Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Please Note: Before interview selection, you will need to provide unofficial transcripts to verify GPA and full time enrollment.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience or demonstrated interest in computational fluid dynamics, and in working in UNIX computational environments.
