Job Description

A graduate student internship is available in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) Integrated Applications Center. NREL is the nation's primary laboratory for research, development and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. NREL has an immediate opening for a full-time (40 hours per week) summer internship in our Golden, Colorado office. For local students in Colorado, this could expand to also include a part- to full-time (20-40 hours per week) year-round student internship and the position could include full-time coverage during school breaks (e.g., winter holidays and summer) in our Golden, Colorado office. Potential candidates would also be eligible to work at NREL as a graduate intern for up to one year after graduation.

NREL seeks a self-motivated graduate-level intern to support the Project Development & Finance (PD&F) Group on our analysis support provided to the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD). This team provides research analysis and technical support to DOD clean energy projects at Navy, Marine, Army, and Air Force locations. PD&F assistance is intended to support DOD decisions that increase resiliency, security, adaptivity, and recovery, so that different bases and locations can make informed decisions about increasing building efficiency, incorporating on-site solar photovoltaics (PV), wind and other generation projects, adding battery energy storage, and incorporating microgrids that can partial or fully island.

This PD&F DOD internship position will consist of three main tasks:

1) Support and conduct research on appropriate commercially-available technologies for consideration at DOD sites;

2) Support and identify project development barriers and opportunities; and

3) Create discounted cash flow (DCF) project financing proformas.


Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Please Note: Before interview selection, you will need to provide unofficial transcripts to verify GPA and full time enrollment.


Preferred Qualifications

Backgrounds in engineering and financing are encouraged. Experience with the DOD or with one Service Branch a plus. Must be personable, professional, and comfortable engaging with DOD stakeholders and working in teams in a fast-paced environment. Excellent quantitative, critical thinking, communication, research, analysis, and writing skills required. Must be able to develop ideas and solutions based on novel or unconventional approaches. Ability to apply individual initiative to accomplish tasks based on limited or partial information is essential. Knowledge of clean energy technologies that are commercially available is strongly recommended. An ideal candidate will have a background in energy efficiency or renewable energy project development, project construction, construction management, and/or project financing.
