Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado, is the nation's primary laboratory for research, development, and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The National Bioenergy Center and the Strategic Analysis Center at NREL has openings for two full time Interns in renewable energy market assessment and characterization.

The successful candidate(s) will support projects performing market assessments of the renewable energy market space in two emerging and important market areas for renewable energy technologies. Two projects have been identified and the successful intern (1 intern per project) will perform market analysis in the following two areas with the final product being a draft manuscript ready to submit for peer review publication. The two study areas are as follows;

  • Currently about one half of the world’s cobalt, used in electric car batteries, comes from mines in one region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. If this source of Cobalt became unavailable how long would it take for the world’s supply to recover?
  • At what product value and electricity price would carbon capture and utilization become economically viable for the production of fuels and/or bioproducts? This study will involve looking across the gamut of CO2 sources such as fossil fueled power plants and carbon capture technologies and determining a price point for each option.

Required Education and Experience:

Currently pursuing or recently awarded a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) degree ideally with an energy focused curriculum. The successful candidate should have an BS degree in an engineering or science discipline. Experience working with Microsoft Office software tools, especially Excel and PowerPoint.


Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Please Note: Before interview selection, you will need to provide unofficial transcripts to verify GPA and full time enrollment.


Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated excellence in technical coursework; excellent writing skills; troubleshooting and problem-solving skills; attention to detail; dedication to a safe and clean work environment; ability to work independently or in multi-disciplinary teams and to deliver high-quality results within aggressive timelines.

Prior internships where work was conducted in a technology development institution. Experience preforming marking analysis of new disruptive technologies to determine potential beneficial impacts of new technologies and timelines for market penetration.
