Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado is the nation’s primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. A graduate student internship position is available in NREL’s Chemistry and Nanoscience Center to explore electrochemical properties in electrochemical energy storage systems.

The center seeks talented, innovative and self-motivated graduate student intern candidates in the areas of mechanical engineering and electrochemistry. The position will focus on fundamental understanding chemistry and electrochemical properties of the lithium-ion (Li-ion) electrode. Candidates should have a demonstrated track record of success in electrochemical characterizations, electrolyte, synthesis of the Li-ion electrodes as well as devising innovative solutions to challenging problems. And candidates should be capable of self-direction and carrying out distinct projects in parallel. Prior hands-on experience in the area such as electrochemical testing for batteries, study of the electrolytes and structural characterization is desirable. Attractive candidates for this position should have a strong background in mechanical engineering, material science and electrochemistry. The candidate will be required to work closely with the EHS team to follow safe work procedures.


Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Please Note: Before interview selection, you will need to provide unofficial transcripts to verify GPA and full time enrollment.


Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D student in mechanical engineering or related field. Experience in Lithium-ion battery fabrication and analysis.
