Job Description

The DC Office of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) Strategic Energy Analysis Center is looking for an exceptional student to join the team for the summer. NREL is the nation's primary laboratory for research, development and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The position is full-time (40 hours per week) for the summer; exact dates flexible. The successful candidate will have experience in science and technology as well as energy policy, excellent writing and communication skills, spreadsheet and analysis experience, and an enthusiasm for energy topics. Job duties will include reviewing topical reports and documents, analysis of energy and solar policy issues, and writing and editing content and presentations. Possible topics include: state-level solar market, utility engagement in solar, integrating solar in buildings (combining solar, storage and energy efficiency), and challenges and opportunities related to integrating solar technologies into the electric grid.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with senior analysts on short- and long-term technology and policy analysis tasks as needed. Tasks may include:

  • Researching, compiling, and analyzing market data
  • Working with senior analysts to conduct modeling analysis exploring the role of solar energy technologies under alternative future scenarios
  • Drafting of written and presentation materials

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution.
Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation.
Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

  • Background and expertise in energy technology, energy economics, policy analysis, or engineering
